La Nonna @ Holland V – Pure Good Italian Food

A few days ago, I met up with a friend for dinner at Holland Village. As she’s a vegetarian, there are limited choices for her, and she eventually decided to go La Nonna as there are vegetarian pizza choices there. For me, I was happy to oblige, since I had a very pleasant experience at La Nonna the last time round.

This time round, as my friend made a reservation there, we managed to sit inside with the air-con. (If you’re unwilling to sit at the alfresco dining area because of the humid weather, be sure to make reservations as La Nonna always gets very packed during lunch and dinner hours.)

My friend ordered the La Nonna Pizza, which is a pizza with parmesan and mozarella cheese, tomato, asparagus, egg and black truffle. Being a seafood lover, I ordered the Crab Meat Linguine in creamy tomato sauce.

La Nonna Pizza - EAT

I had a slice of the La Nonna pizza and it was good. It has a rather strong taste of truffles, and so it’s another one of those food that you either love or hate. Some say truffles has a foul smell, while some think it has the most pleasant smell and taste ever. I’m one of those who can appreciate it, and so I loved the pizza. The pizza actually doesn’t have a lot of ingredients on it though, unlike some of the other places that pile loads of ingredients onto their pizzas, such as Peperoni Pizza or Skinny Pizza. It just has cheese, tomato sauce and a strip of asparagus on each slice as you can see from the photo (I actually find their stinginess with the ingredients rather funny). It also has a semi-raw egg in the middle, which my friend spread evenly on the whole pizza. The overall taste of the pizza is interesting, and the ingredients work well together.

La Nonna Crabmeat Spaghetti - EAT

Now for my Crab Meat Linguine. I just absolutely loved it. It has a creamy tomato base, that tastes absolutely delicious together with the crab meat, which was fresh and didn’t have a fishy smell. I’m inclined to compare it to the Crab Meat Linguine at Marmalade Pantry, and I must say, the Crab Meat Linguine here definitely beats the linguine at Marmalade Pantry hands down in terms of taste. While the linguine at Marmalade Pantry was too salty, the saltiness here at La Nonna was just right, and their creamier base also makes it tastier. My only complaint for La Nonna is that they’re too stingy with the crab meat. Few strips and strands of crab meat just aren’t enough for a seafood lover for me! (Or maybe I’m just a glutton, hee hee)

As for the price, it’s on the pricier side, with each of us paying about $27 after taxes, without ordering any other sides or desserts. So for the price-conscious, do consider heading for La Nonna on weekdays for lunch, as they have weekday set lunches at $22 before taxes. The set lunch usually includes either a soup or salad, the main, a dessert and tea or coffee, which makes the price extremely value-for-money.

The set lunch menu is constantly changing. The last time I was there, I had a Seafood Linguine in Marinara sauce that was absolutely delicious too.

La Nonna Seafood Marinara - EAT

Like my Crab Meat Linguine, the Seafood Linguine was served al dente, being not too soft nor too firm,  and the squid and prawns were all very fresh.

La Nonna Chocolate Mousse - EAT

I also loved the dessert that came along in the set – Chocolate Mousse. They balanced the sweetness of the chocolate mousse really well with their tangy raspberry and citrus sauce. And of course, it always helps when your dessert’s presented nicely. (:

So anyway, La Nonna’s a really good place to go for some authentic and tasty Italian food! It’s located at 26 Lorong Mambong  Singapore 277685.
